Wrexham Man’s ‘Channel Swim’ Challenge Underway

A man who suffered life-changing injuries after being found lying in a coma on a Wrexham road is helping raise money for the charity that supported him during his rehabilitation.

Former RAF officer, Greg Vickers is undertaking a mammoth ‘Channel Swim’ at Wrexham Waterworld in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund.

In 2005 aged just 23, Greg suffered life-changing brain injuries after being found lifeless on a road in Borras.  After enduring six skull fractures and spending 15 months in hospital, he now struggles with speech and has sight impairment.  To this day, what exactly unfolded on that night remains a mystery.

During the lengthy rehabilitation period, the RAF Benevolent Fund supported Greg and his family and now the 34 year old is keen to give something back.

Greg has been sporty throughout his life and is in the process of swimming 60 lengths of Waterworld’s 25 metre swimming pool, three times a week for 12 weeks.

Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, has supported Greg and his family over the years and recently visited Waterworld to see how his Channel challenge was progressing.

She said: “It was lovely to catch up with Greg and his parents, Ron and Eileen.  He is raising money for such a valuable cause that’s close to the family’s heart.”

“Unsurprisingly, Greg is well ahead of schedule. He started the fundraising challenge about a month ago and is already expecting to finish within the next week or two!”

“Greg’s original target was £550 but over £800 has already been donated via his Just Giving page.  Taking all donations into account, he has currently raised almost £1,400.  He is a credit to his family and I hope even more people will support Greg’s cause.”
