People whose lives have been affected by cancer are being encouraged to join a new support group with a difference in Wrexham.

Linked to parkrun, the very first 5K Your Way in Wrexham will take place at Erddig on Saturday 29th October and local Member of the Senedd, Lesley Griffiths is urging local people living with or impacted by cancer to take part.

5K Your Way is a community-based initiative aiming to encourage anyone affected by cancer to walk, run, cheer or volunteer at a local 5K Your Way parkrun event on the last Saturday of every month.  As well as encouraging those living with and beyond cancer to attend, 5K Your Way is also open to friends, family members and those working in cancer services.

The first 5K Your Way at Erddig parkrun will be at 9am on Saturday 29th October.  The 6-strong ambassador team is made up of local people who have had a cancer diagnosis, Health Care Professionals and Wrexham resident Helen Murray, a local Cancer Rehabilitation Instructor.

Lesley Griffiths MS said: “A cancer diagnosis will turn people’s lives upside-down. As well as it obviously affecting the individual, it also impacts everyone around them.  Regular physical activity during and after cancer helps boost general health and can improve a person’s mental wellbeing.

“I’m really pleased this unique initiative is coming to Wrexham. People shouldn’t be concerned about the distance; it’s all about the taking part, venturing outdoors and socialising.  I’m sure the sense of community created will be beneficial and have a positive impact.

“Helen visited the Senedd recently to help raise awareness of the initiative and I wish her and the team the very best of luck ahead of the inaugural event.  I hope 5K Your Way is a success in Wrexham and helps support local residents whose lives have been impacted by cancer.”

The 5K Your Way initiative was founded by MOVE Charity, a nationwide charity supporting and inspiring people to be physically active following a cancer diagnosis.
