Politicians hopeful further improvements will be made at train station

Local politicians have met with Network Rail representatives to discuss the recent renovations at Gwersyllt Station.

Wrexham’s Member of the Senedd, Lesley Griffiths arranged to meet with Network Rail representatives at the station, along with Welsh Labour Community Councillor, Sheelagh Mackenzie Jones, who has been campaigning on behalf of Gwersyllt residents.

A number of improvements have recently been carried out at Gwersyllt Station, including the opening of a new access point to Platform 2 off Station Court. New signage has been installed and improvements have been made to the highway and footpath linking Station Court, High Street and Hope Street.

The changes have been implemented due to the increase of train services along the Wrexham to Bidston line.

However, Network Rail’s decision to close the passenger crossing between platforms has proved unpopular with certain residents.

Lesley Griffiths MS, who has been working with Cllr Mackenzie Jones on the issue, said: “Passengers could previously cross between platforms but due to the planned increase in trains running along the Wrexham to Bidston line, Network Rail has closed the barrow crossing and locked the platform end gates.  This is to ensure the safety of all passengers, which is paramount, and whilst I am aware there is some disappointment locally, I understand it is highly unlikely that this decision will be reversed.

“People with mobility scooters, wheelchairs and prams have been particularly affected and after visiting the station, it is clear further improvements need to be made.”

Network Rail confirmed to Ms Griffiths it is working alongside Wrexham Council’s Highways department and is looking to provide alternative and safer access to both platforms.

Lesley Griffiths MS added: “Although passengers can still reach Hope Street Bridge via steps leading from the platforms, there is no pavement at the access to the steps and visibility is poor.  The pavement on the other side of the road is narrow and the road is busy so I can fully understand pedestrians’ concerns.

“The improvements already made at Gwersyllt Station are welcome but I was pleased to hear the work is ongoing. Both Cllr Mackenzie Jones and I will continue to monitor developments.”
