Social care workers in Wales to get £500 bonus

In recognition of their ongoing dedication and hard work during the coronavirus pandemic, all social care workers in Wales will receive an additional £500.

The Welsh Labour Government will fund the extra payment and Wrexham’s Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths has welcomed the latest announcement.

In total, over 64,500 care home workers and domiciliary care workers throughout Wales are expected to receive the payment.

It comes after the Welsh Government has provided an initial £40m extra funding for adult social care services to help meet the extra costs associated with responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lesley Griffiths AM said: “This has been a challenging time for many of us but social care workers have gone above and beyond the call of duty, risking their own lives to help others in need.”

“Their effort and dedication in looking after some of the most vulnerable in our communities is very much appreciated and this payment is designed to provide further recognition of the value attached to their work.”

Further details about the extra payment will be announced in due course.  The Welsh Government is working with local authorities, who commission social care services in Wales, and with trade unions and Care Forum Wales, to finalise details.

As these are extraordinary times, the Welsh Government has also urged the UK Government not to tax the extra payment to enable social workers to keep the full amount.  It is also working with the Department for Work and Pensions to make sure it does not impact on people’s benefit entitlements.
